Our Approach
Overall, our objectives were to help clarify TaxJar’s priorities, allowing them to expedite delivery and maximize growth, while putting the people and processes in place to sustain that growth beyond the plan laid out in our formal engagement. To achieve these goals, we simultaneously helped TaxJar with two pressing initiatives: creating a value-oriented roadmap for the next 6 months and building out an effective Product function.
To develop the right roadmap for TaxJar, we began by gathering perspectives and priorities from across the organization: Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Support, and Services. We synthesized these inputs and supplemented them with competitor research and customer data. Prioritizing growth while also being mindful of scalability, we collaborated with TaxJar to create a roadmap capable of tripling their Serviceable Addressable Market. A thoughtful approach to delivering smaller units of incremental value as fast as possible and clear direction for Engineering meant that TaxJar was able to demonstrate the value of its three top priorities to customers and prospects within 3 months. Combined with a data-driven review of TaxJar’s pricing and packaging, the roadmap set out a path for TaxJar to maintain YoY growth >100%.
Meanwhile, we connected with Engineering leaders to understand their team structures, technology, and process needs to develop a tailored Product org design. We detailed specific roles who would be good matches for current engineering team skills and responsibilities. Additionally, we generated interview-based candidate evaluation scorecards to support HR in knowing which candidates should be top picks.
